Gay marriage in SVG: A personal beleif

Gay marriage should not be legalized in St.Vincent and the Grenadines

Top six Reasons:

Marriage is a religious rite between one man and one woman. According to a July 31, 2003 statement from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and approved by Pope John Paul II, marriage "was established by the Creator with its own nature, essential properties and purpose. No ideology can erase from the human spirit the certainty that marriage exists solely between a man and a woman…”

The institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as between a man and a woman. In the Oct. 15, 1971 decision Baker v. Nelson, the Supreme Court of Minnesota found that "The institution of marriage as a union of man and woman, uniquely involving the procreation and rearing of children within a family, is as old as the book of Genesis.”

Gay marriage could potentially lead down a "slippery slope" giving people in polygamous, incestuous, bestial, and other nontraditional relationships the right to marry. Glen Lavy, JD, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, argued in a May 21, 2008 Los Angeles Times Op-Ed, "The movement for polygamy and polyamory is poised to use the successes of same-sex couples as a springboard for further de-institutionalizing marriage."

Gay marriage may lead to more children being raised in same-sex households, which are not an optimum environment because children need both a mother and father. Girls who are raised apart from their fathers are reportedly at higher risk for early sexual activity and teenage pregnancy. Children without a mother are deprived of the emotional security and unique advice that mothers provide. An Apr. 2001 study published in American Sociological Review suggests that children with lesbian or gay parents are more likely to engage in homosexual behavior.

Marriage is a privilege, not a right. Society can choose to endorse certain types of sexual arrangements and give support in the form of benefits to these arrangements. Marriage was created to allow society to support heterosexual couples in procreation and society can choose not to give the same benefits to same-sex couples.

Marriage should not be extended to same-sex couples because they cannot produce children together. Allowing gay marriage would only further shift the purpose of marriage from producing and raising children to adult gratification.

Geothermal energy- SVG's back up plan

Geothermal energy

The thermal energy of  volcanic islands makes them of interest for geothermal exploration. According to Huttrer St.Vincent ranks 4th of the list of geothermal energy potential in the Caribbean.

  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines have an estimated 890 MW (mega watts) of geothermal power potential.
  • St. Vincent’s geothermal potential has not been formally studied. INEEL (US department of energy), GMC, and USGIC prepared a preliminary assessment of the potential for the development of geothermal resources of St. Vincent under a DOE (department of energy) sponsored program.
  • La Soufrière volcano has erupted three times since 1902, there is a steaming resurgent dome in the crater and there are numerous hot springs in river valleys on the western side of the volcano (Huttrer, 1998).
  • Of additional interest are three striking features near Wallibou Beach, in an area locally known as “Hot Waters,”and a circular feature near Morgans Wood near Trinity Falls (Huttrer, 1995).
Geothermal power could almost surely be sold to the utilities for less than the 12 -15¢/kWh cost of generation now estimated by the various utility companies, and the prospect of initiating significant savings is appealing to government officials as well as the citizens-on- the-streets (Huttrer, 1998).

Politics: A matter of opinion

St Vincent and the Grenadines politics takes place in the framework of a parliamentary democracy. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an independent Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state, represented by a Governor General, who acts on the advice of the prime minister and the cabinet. There are currently four parties that will be taking part in the next election of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The political environment in SVG suggests that this country is divided up in two, categorizing supporters as Unity Labor Party (ULP)  and the New Democratic Party (NDP) everyone supporting their party’s culture — good or bad, without thinking of the consequences.
In supporting a party one should assess both party pros and cons and not only choose based on who the crowd is following and follow blindly. The party should be chosen based on the policies and goals of the party and for the better development of SVG.

The questions now are:
  • do we vote for the party we can get something from?
  • or the party that has the nation's best interest at heart?
  • do we choose because we like what this leader says?
  • or do we really assess and see if it can actually be done?
